"Old Town" is a precise cartographic representation of Nicosia, the Cypriot capital. The artist created it with the ambition of transforming a map into a sculptural piece over the course of several months. The process involved cutting, shaping, and painting the wood, as well as laminating acrylic sheets to create a transparent background.
Nicosia has been a divided city since 1974, making it the last divided city in Europe. The Old Town holds personal significance for the artist, as it was where he grew up and has both happy and painful memories due to its proximity to the border.
Through this cartographic piece, the artist hopes to illustrate how we sometimes overlook things that are right in front of us because our attention is captured by something else. The piece aims to depict the fifty-year-old frozen border as it truly is: plain, transparent, and empty.
